Should You Watch It? Fall 2014 Season

Since I’m yet again watching all the shows this Fall 2014 season, I thought I’d start doing a “Should You Watch It?” for each season I partake in. Totally did not steal this idea from r/anime.

The only show I’m not watching this season (excluding shows that are not available subbed or even raw) is Cardfight!! Vanguard G, because I have not watched the previous four seasons to the season.

Here’s the rankings that I will be using:

  • Drop it – Not worth watching.
  • Consider it – Consider watching it if you’re a fan of the genre or maybe when it is done airing.
  • Watch it – A show that I deem “good” and should be enjoyed by most anime viewers out there.
  • Must watch it – A show that is a “must watch” of the season.

Ai Tenchi Muyo!Consider it – This show airs everyday and is supposed to be a homage to the Tenchi series, which I’ve yet to watch. Coming from someone that has not seen the Tenchi series, this show isn’t that enjoyable, but it isn’t entirely bad. Not a fan of the recap episodes either.

Akatsuki no YonaConsider it – I’m not really a fan of shows set during whatever time period this may be, but it has enough drama to warrant a consideration.

Amagi Brilliant Park: Must watch it – Basically Roller coaster Tycoon the anime, which we’ve all wanted sometime in our life. Right?

Bonjour♪Koiaji Pâtisserie: Drop it – Coming from a fan of harems, this is one bad harem.

Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo: Watch it – A pretty cool mechs/dragons mashup with a bit of fanservice thrown into it. Also, the MC is awesome.

Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai: Watch it – A decent mystery story with a fantastic female lead, one of the best leads this season.

Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai KenWatch it – A hilarious short-form anime. Each episode is a 3 minute comedy skit.

Denki-gai no Honya-san: Watch it – The best comedy this season in one of the weirdest locations, a bookstore. Despite this, it still manages to keep me laughing.

Donten ni Warau: Drop it – A boring story with boring characters. Oh, and the setting is not the best either.

Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (TV)Watch it – It’s a Fate/stay night series. What more of a reason is required? In all seriousness, the animation budget on this guy is massive.

Garo: Honoo no KokuinDrop it – Although the show has some amazing CG, that alone can’t make up for the generic storyline.

Girlfriend (Kari)Watch it – Girls being girls. What I originally thought would be a gigantic harem actually turned out to be a girls making friends with other girls, which is just fine by me.

Grisaia no KajitsuMust watch it – Although many will flame this show for being a not-so-great adaptation of the VN. I for one, not having played the VN, thoroughly enjoy the show and its characters.

Gugure! Kokkuri-sanConsider it – A random and weird comedy show. All sorts of animal-human hybrids. It seems to be the Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun of this season.

Gundam Build Fighters Try: Consider it – Although this is set after the events of the original Gundam Build Fighters series, the characters and their stories are completely new and there isn’t much correlation between Try and the original series. I’d still recommend watching the first season beforehand, however.

Gundam: G no ReconguistaDrop it – Although I’ve never seen a legitimate Gundam series before, I know that this isn’t what it should be.

Hi☆sCoool! SeHa GirlsConsider it – Fan of the old SEGA? This anime seems to be a homage to that time with far too many references to count. It’s pretty entertaining for what it is.

Hitsugi no Chaika: Avenging Battle: Watch it – More Chaika? Yes, more Chaika.

Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka deConsider it – So Trigger made this anime about a ton of high school students who have super powers. It is okay.

Kaitou JokerDrop it – Go watch Magic Kaito instead of this.

Karen SenkiDrop it – The CG in this show is fantastic, but the show itself is terrible. So sad.

Kiseijuu: Sei no KakuritsuMust watch it – A very entertaining story with a certain likable character. Might end up being the best this season.

Log Horizon 2nd SeasonWatch it – It picks up where Log Horizon left off, and while it may not be as good as the original series, it still is pretty cool.

Madan no Ou to VanadisConsider it – A decent ecchi-romance story with a not-so-great art style. The setting isn’t all that great either.

Magic Kaito 1412Watch it – Very cool detective show about everyone’s favorite Detective Conan villain. Doesn’t require any prior knowledge of the Detective Conan series either.

Mushishi Zoku Shou 2nd SeasonMust watch it – I don’t know what you’re doing with your life if you haven’t already started watching this.

Nanatsu no Taizai: Watch it – Fan of shounen? This is probably for you. It’s also getting the full 24-episode treatment, so it should turn out quite nice.

Ookami Shoujo to Kuro OujiConsider it – Not really entertaining, but may be for some. Also known as “Abusive Relationships: The Anime”

Ore, Twintails ni Narimasu: Must watch it – A fantastic series about a guy trying to save the world’s twintails from some weird bad guys. Also, gender bender.

Orenchi no Furo JijouConsider it – Not as great as the other short-form anime this season, but not enough to warrant a complete drop. It’s about a merman, if that interests you in the slightest.

Oshiri Kajiri Mushi 3Consider it – A ridiculous comedy about bugs biting butts. Only worth your consideration if you liked the first two seasons.

Psycho-Pass 2Must watch it – Even though it may not be as good as the first, it is the mystery show to watch this season.

Sanzoku no Musume RonjaDrop it – Don’t let the fact that Studio Ghibli being listed as a producer fool you. The show doesn’t have the charm of the studio and the show itself was animated by Polygon Pictures, the guys who did Knights of Sidonia. The CG is great, but the show is so not worth it.

Selector Spread WIXOSSMust watch it – The sequel to one of Spring’s best anime is finally here and it is epic. Please watch the original first, however.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no UsoWatch it – A fantastic romance with a musical cover to it.

Shingeki no Bahamut: GenesisWatch it – A very well-done action series, even if it is based on a terrible card game.

ShirobakoWatch it – Actually quite educational. Shows the process of creating anime and how it ends up as we see it. Oh, and a bit of drama here and there.

Sora no MethodConsider it – Cute girls and a not-so-cute story. It seems very similar to Anohana, but nowhere near as good.

Terra Formars: Drop it – This show has too much censoring to be worth your time. Even uncensored, the story isn’t that great and it is rather slow paced for a series adapting a manga that’s 10 or so volumes up.

Tribe Cool CrewConsider it – If you’re into kids dancing and enjoying themselves, then give it a shot. If not, show it to your kids.

Trinity SevenDrop it – Despite all the good things I hear about the manga, this is nothing more than a harem wrapped up in a terrible story.

Ushinawareta Mirai wo MotometeWatch it – A fairly interesting drama that’s worth your time.

World TriggerConsider it – I don’t understand where all the hate towards this series comes from, as the series isn’t necessarily bad. Although it isn’t that great either, it would be kind of fun to marathon later on.

Yowamushi Pedal: Grande RoadMust watch it – The sequel to one of the best sports anime ever created. Continues the high-intensity cycling of the first season.

Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de AruDrop it – I don’t even know what’s going on here, but I know it is not good.

And there you have it. Complaints? I don’t wanna hear them. Also want to note that I don’t drop shows. Each and every one of these I will finish, even if it is the worst thing ever because I’m a masochist.

Cublikefoot’s Top 10 Games of 2013

These are my personal top ten games that were released this year. There have been a lot of great games released this year, and I ended up playing through more games this year than any other. Although a lot of games I played this year were released some time ago, I’ve only included those released in 2013. A lot of you may disagree or even hate this lggist. I’m no console gamer, so I’ve yet to play games such as The Last of Us or Grand Theft Auto V. Maybe sometime in the future. Anyways, let’s begin with number 10.

Number 10 – Disney’s Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse

This is a remake of the original 1990 game bearing the same name, but it sure did surprise me. The game’s stages were outstanding, each presenting a new, vivid area for me to explore. The platforming was very smooth and the overall experience was one well-had. Don’t let Mickey Mouse’s presence in the game prevent you from trying it out! Although the game was very short, It definitely deserves a spot in my top ten this year.

Number 9 – Of Guards and Thieves

I was introduced to OGAT by a certain French friend of mine. I was a bit skeptical at first, as the game seemed stupidly simple. I then found myself in a multiplayer match with a few other people and realized the full potential of the game. The game is simply amazing. Everything about it. Even though it’s still being developed, the content already offered is very fun and addictive, especially when played with friends. The game’s formula is simple. There are thieves, who try to steal a thing, and there are guards, who protect the things. I highly recommend the game, its certainly provided me with hours of fun.

Number 8 – Pokemon X & Pokemon Y

Well, it wouldn’t be a top ten without a Pokemon game, right? For the longest time, I was patiently awaiting this duo, finally getting my copy of Pokemon Y on release day. This next installment in the Pokemon series is a new take on the style that we’re accustomed to and this new style was executed well. The games offer countless hours of playtime and are a great addition to the series. Although this may not be the only handheld game on my list, Pokemon X & Y are easily some of the best handheld games to have come out in a while. A great redemption after the disappointing release of Black and White and Black and White 2.

Number 7 – Battlefield 4

This year’s best example of a multiplayer first-person shooter. After making the mistake of purchasing Call of Duty: Ghosts, I turned to Battlefield 4, the other FPS juggernaut at play this year. Excellent decision on my part, Battlefield quickly turned out to be just what I wanted in a multiplayer shooter. The customization system and the variety of large servers really put this game up there. The sniping mechanics in the game force me to actually try when I snipe, making it so much more satisfying to get a kill with a sniper. It’s essentially a polished Battlefield 3, with an upgrade on the graphics, but it still manages to put itself on my list.

Number 6 – Wooden Sen’SeY

This may come as a surprise to a lot of you, but this was one of the first games that I ever reviewed, and it really surprised me. The game was spectacular in many ways. The platforming was challenging, yet doable, and the graphic style chosen was simply fantastic. I can’t say enough good about this game. Go check out my full review for more on Wooden Sen’SeY. Be sure to try it out sometime!

Number 5 – Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition

I might have to explain this one. The game was actually released in 2011, but it never actually made its way to PC until this year, in the form of the “Komplete Edition”. It now sits up there firmly as my all-time favorite fighting game. 2013 was a year of discovery in the fighting game genre for me. I tried Injustice, Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, and even a few of the Dragon Ball Budokai Tenkaichi games, but ended up settling with Mortal Kombat. The game features an excellent combo and move system. The fights are smooth and responsive, and the characters are, for the most part, quite balanced. Highly recommended.

Number 4 – Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Another sequel to a game of my childhood. New Leaf retains the core mechanics that are found in any Animal Crossing game, while introducing a plethora of new features, with the most notable one being the addition of the player’s role as the mayor. Many childhood memories were relived when playing this game: the grinding for bells to pay off debts, the decorating of my home, and the various Easter eggs and secrets placed into the experience. It’s easier than ever to play Animal Crossing online with friends, and I did so with quite a few. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is a fantastic game, and I consider it an essential game for any 3DS owner.

Number 3 – Bioshock Infinite

This should have been expected. Already a winner of several awards and considered a gem this year, Bioshock Infinite greatly improves on the original Bioshock formula, combining an epic storyline with fantastic gameplay. I personally did not enjoy the original Bioshock games, but Infinite surely made up for the faults of the originals. I rated this game a 10/10, mostly for the compelling storyline, but also taking into account the many different gameplay aspects that make Bioshock, well, Bioshock. Although the game’s experience cannot truly be replayed, it is a fantastic game that I’d highly recommend.

Number 2 – Rayman Legends

The best platformer of the year and only the second Rayman game that I’ve ever played. I beat the game in a single sitting, which took about eight or so hours, with a friend of mine. The game has many, many different things to do aside from the actual campaign. All of the original Rayman Origins levels are included in Rayman Legends, which was awesome. There was just so much good in this game, the experience was unforgettable. I enjoyed the speed-run levels the most, where we had to reach the end of the level in a certain amount of time. There was also a form of soccer that could be played with another player. This mode was great and provided a quick, fun break from the campaign. Rayman Legends has also earned a 10/10 in my book, so give it a shot.

Number 1 – Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Game of the year goes to the latest entry in the Splinter Cell series. This is the second game I’ve played in the series, other than Conviction, and is definitely the best stealth videogame I’ve ever played. Yes, even better than Metal Gear Solid and Dishonored. Blacklist combines an excellent story with amazing gameplay. The experience may have been cut short by the length of the game, but there were so many great things about the game that I just had to give it the number one spot. The stealth mechanics, the customization, the variety of levels offered and the different ways to play them are just a few of the features that make this game awesome. Hands down, Splinter Cell: Blacklist wins my game of the year award.

Thanks for tuning in to cublikefoot’s top ten games of 2013. Looking forward to a great 2014 and the road ahead.
