Ion Maiden is powered by the Build engine, the same engine behind a lot of classic 3D Realms games like Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior. The game currently only features a “preview campaign”, but if this preview campaign is any indication, Ion Maiden is going to be a great game.

The preview campaign consist of one full level, barely taking me thirty minutes to clear (although I could have probably cleared it faster if I rushed). This level is packed full of enemies to kill and secrets to find. In fact, I had only found 2 out of the 33 total secrets, so I definitely could have spent more time looking for those. Even so, it was a lot of fun to play through this level, using the various weapons given to me.

Despite this, I would still only recommend buying the game after it releases. The Steam store page says that the game will be in early access for only six months, so it is not even that long of a wait. If the developers deliver on that promise, then it will definitely be worth the recommendation.

You can buy Ion Maiden here on Steam.

I was provided a free review copy of the game. Read more about how I do my game reviews here.
