Tangledeep is probably the closest we will get to a Mystery Dungeon game on Steam. I had the heaviest Mystery Dungeon vibes while traversing Tangledeep, killing enemies along the way and amassing a mountain of loot.

One of the game’s greatest strengths is also one of its greatest weaknesses: its complexity. As a newcomer, Tangledeep is rather difficult to get into. This is especially true when it comes to the loot. I had an entire mountain of loot after clearing just three floors, with numerous different weapon types and items I had no idea how to use. I spent quite a bit of time just in my inventory, figuring out what each item did. The tutorial is short too, which certainly did not help. This game is a rogue-like with a permadeath mechanic though, so replayability is of top priority. As such, this complexity is warranted, to keep the game interesting even after multiple attempts.

Would recommend the game to fans of the Mystery Dungeon series or just dungeon crawlers in general. Permadeath may turn a few away, but the game actually offers different difficulty options, one of which removes the permadeath mechanic. As such, the game can appeal to both casual and hardcore players. The game even offers several options to configure core mechanics, making the game easier or harder depending on player preference.

You can buy Tangledeep here on Steam.

I was provided a free review copy of the game. Read more about how I do my game reviews here.
