I was intrigued by the idea of a riot simulation game, but Riot – Civil Unrest was actually rather disappointing in that department. And it is not even the graphics that caused that disappointment, although they could use some work.
It felt like I was not contributing anything to the game at all, like the game did not even need my input. I just constantly right clicked and achieved my objectives by doing such. On some occasions, I would throw out firecrackers and other distractions for the police, but it felt like they had no effect. The game basically plays itself.
There is definitely more strategy involved when playing as the police (having to manage different squads and such), but even then, right-clicking just seemed to be the answer to any situation. The game is still in Early Access, but I do not think that I will ever be able to enjoy this one simply because the gameplay would need an entire rewrite. As the game has been in development for a long time, I do not expect that to happen. As such, I decided not to continue playing this one and simply leave it as a single video.
You can buy RIOT – Civil Unrest here on Steam.
I was provided a free review copy of the game. Read more about how I do my game reviews here.
