Fortresscraft was first released in 2011, on the Xbox 360 and went on to become one of the most downloaded Xbox Arcade games ever. Fortresscraft Evolved is a complete remake of the original Fortresscraft in the Unity engine and was released on Steam Dec 10, 2013.

A lot of people will go ahead and compare this game to Minecraft and, while it does share some similarities with my all-time favorite game, it is actually quite different, especially in terms of creative building. There is a survival mode in the game, but when I tried to start a new world with it, I was placed in creative mode. No idea why that happened.

The creative mechanics in the game are fantastic. There are many features that make building a lot easier than what you’d probably expect from a game like this (try shift+left clicking with a block in hand). I was even able to whip up a quick tree house in about 30 seconds, and this was no ordinary tree house, it was massive. I really love what the devs did to make creative building as painless as possible.

The game does have some technical issues however, with the game sound being my major complaint. They seemed to lag behind. Oh, and is there supposed to be game music? I heard some at one point, but, other than that, it appears to be nonexistent.

Anyways, the game is fun, if you know what you’re doing. The survival mode, however, simply is not as fun as I had expected it to be. Recommended purely for its creative capabilities!
